Collaborative e-Commerce Platform for B2B

Extending business data interchange – EDI and XML interoperability
With the uptake of company extranets, portals, e-marketplaces, future developments for B2B e-commerce tend towards the Internet environment, and based on extensible Markup Language (XML) technologies. This creates another challenge in terms of compatibility in electronic interfaces to capture and process information between the conventional GS1 EDI and the new Internet environment.
In July 2000, a B2B Data Exchange Task Force was set up under the e-Commerce Advisory Board of the GS1 Hong Kong to examine the interoperability between both VAN – and Web-based EDI platforms, and the emerging GS1 XML message protocols. The result demonstrated that the interoperability of GS1 EANCOM EDI message and GS1 XML message were achieved without jeopardizing the performance of data exchange activities. For instance in 2002, GS1 Hong Kong invited a pair of partners in musical entertainment industry to carry out a pilot project to exchange Purchase Order document using GS1 XML Schema via ebXML Communication Protocol. This pilot case suggest that by combining ebXML with GS1 XML Schema, the messaging tools means an affordable and more user-friendly choice for local companies to start off their e-business while reserving room for global expansion in the future. As a facilitator of efficient trade practices in Hong Kong, GS1 Hong Kong is committed to further extend the EZ*TRADE service with using GS1 XML Schema and ebXML technology.
