Identification Numbers

GS1 identification numbers are the keys to access information about a product (physical or non-physical item) on a computer file. The numbers are unique, non-significant and global. They can be allocated to trade items, logistics units, locations, assets and service relationships.

Numbers Allocation Rules

In assigning the identification numbers, some principles and rules should be noted.

Barcodes

The identification numbers and the supplementary information can be represented in barcode format to support automatic data capture, thus enhancing the accuracy in data collection process. There are different symbologies (barcode formats) in GS1 System for different application uses.

Barcodes Printing Quality

Accurate number assignment of identification number and proper selection of barcode symbology may not guarantee the barcode is first-time-first-scanned. Barcode Quality is also an important factor to determine its scanning reliability.

Special Considerations for Variable Measure Retail Items

Many products sold in retail stores do not have a pre-defined weight (or other attribute such as length or area) but are sold on a basis of per unit price, e.g. cheese, meat, fish, electrical wire, timbre, etc. These products are called variable measure retail items. Very often the total price is calculated according to the weight of the item multiplied by the per unit price. Prefix of '29' is reserved for the identification of variable measure retail items.

Special Considerations for Books and Magazines (serial publications)

GS1 has reserved Prefix '977', '978' and '979' for ISSN and ISBN International Organization to convert ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) and ISBN (International Standard Book Number) into a 13-digit GTIN and represented in GTIN-13 barcode symbol.

Special Considerations for Coupon

A coupon is a voucher that can be redeemed at the point of sale for a cash value or free item. Coupon identification is organized at NATIONAL level rather than International level out of the issue of different currency. Prefix ‘99’ is reserved for local GS1 member organization to construct their local coupon number standard.
