EDI / EANCOM
EDI
EDI or Electronic Data Interchange can be conceptualized as paperless trading. A common and useful definition for EDI is:"the transfer of structured data, by agreed message standards, from one computer application to another by electronic means and with a minimum of human intervention." The structuring of data by agreed message standards implies that the data or information to be exchanged is recognizable in content, meaning and format, allowing it to be processed automatically and unambiguously by computers. Two companies deciding to implement EDI are by definition agreeing on the type of data they will exchange, and how the data will be presented. The implementation of EDI demands a much greater degree of co-operation, collaboration and a sharing of information between business partners, effectively building trading partner relationships.

EANCOM
EANCOM is a detailed implementation guideline of the UN/EDIFACT standard messages. UN/EDIFACT messages are often complex and users may easily misunderstand the principles and original intentions of message's designers. EANCOM is a subset of UN/EDIFACT messages providing clear definitions and explanations which allow trading partners to exchange commercial documents in a simple, accurate and cost effective manner.

Benefits of EANCOM
  • Fully compliant to UN/EDIFACT
  • International and multi-sector in application
  • Reducing cost of supporting and rolling out EDI standards by using EANCOM
  • Representing a single face to internal applications
  • Supporting the globalization of trade
  • Available in 21 language
  • Covering a user base of 30,000 companies worldwide

HK EANCOM
There are 47 EANCOM messages in total to support trade, finance and transport industries. In order to provide more pragmatic implementation for the EANCOM message in Hong Kong, GS1 Hong Kong together with its member companies developed a Hong Kong subset of the EANCOM message for retail, distribution, manufacturing, healthcare and apparel industries in 1995. They are:
  • Purchase Order (ORDERS)

  • Invoice (INVOIC)
