XML
XML
XML stands for "eXtensible Markup Language". XML describes a simple, extensible syntax for documents. XML provides a standard framework to exchange different types of data -- for example, an invoice, healthcare claim, project status -- so that the information can be exchanged via an Application Program Interface (API), web automation, database portal, catalog, a workflow document or message can be searched, decoded, manipulated, and displayed consistently and correctly by first implementing EDI dictionaries and extending our vocabulary via on-line repositories to include our business language, rules and objects.

Relationship of XML and EDIFACT
GS1 does not see XML replacing traditional EDI syntaxes such as UN/EDIFACT. At their lowest levels XML and EDIFACT are simply EDI syntaxes, both of which have significant strengths and significant weaknesses. GS1 believes that the implementation of EDIFACT will continue to grow in the near future and that XML and EDIFACT will be used as complementing standards during that period.

GS1 XML Schema
The overall architecture of the GS1 XML schemas is divided into three layers, performing different functions. The layers are: Envelope, Message and Document. Every layer is wrapped inside the other, all of them combined together form an XML message.

GS1 XML Standard
The GS1 XML standard is so called Business Message Standard (BMS) which consists of 2 main documents: (1) XML Business Requirement Document (BRD) and (2) XML Schema (including sample HTML and Instance File). Currently there are 29 XML BMS v 2.0 covering Align, Deliver, Pay and Plan business processes.
