Electronic Product Code (EPC) The Electronic Product Code (EPC) has been conceived as "an Internet of things". The ultimate goal of EPC is that every item in the supply chain – down to the individual point of sale item – would be identified with its own unique number encoded in an RFID tag. The EPC concept relies on an integrated approach that covers data content, software systems, mark-up languages, coding and technical standards. With such an integrated approach, companies will be able to obtain new efficiencies in their business processes through precise tracking and tracing of every single physical good and thus provides greater visibility of items in the supply chain.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a generic term for technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify people or objects. The most common method of identification is to store a serial number that identifies a person or object on a microchip that is attached to an antenna which enables the chip to transmit the identification information to a reader. The reader converts the radio waves reflected back from the RFID tag into digital information that can then be passed on to computers that can make use of it.
