The increased interest in developing Data Synchronisation and Data Alignment within the world of GS1 standards is a direct consequence of the requirement to improve Supply Chain efficiency. This has highlighted the need for conformity and accuracy in describing the characteristics of all items. One of the attributes is package measurement, for which there have previously been no consistently applied rules.
In developing the Data Alignment Project, it became a requirement to enter the measure of product packages, and it was quickly appreciated that there were no adequate package measure standards to ensure conformity. Indeed one global company had over 60 ways to communicate package size to all its trading partners worldwide. Hence, a request was made to the GS1 Global Standards Management Process (GSMP), and a comprehensive set of rules was subsequently devised, tested and agreed. This work resulted in the Package Measurement Rules for Data Alignment.
