Café de Coral Simplifies Scope 3 Calculations for Regulatory Compliance

Title

Background

Body

Rising consumer expectations and new sustainability regulations are prompting businesses to accelerate their environmental initiatives. As one of Asia’s largest listed catering groups, Café de Coral has taken a leading role, achieving its goals ahead of schedule in energy saving, emission reduction and waste recycling.

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) will require listed companies to disclose Scope 3 emissions by 2026, which covers indirect carbon emissions along the supply chain such as procurement, transport and waste.

As a resource‑intensive sector, the food and food services industry relies on multiple suppliers for energy and ingredients, making data collection and integration complex. Manual calculations are prone to error and require significant manpower.

Although Café de Coral already leads its peers, the Group continues to pursue solutions that improve data‑integration efficiency and enhance the transparency and accuracy of supply‑chain emission data to meet upcoming Scope 3 disclosure requirements.

Solution – ESG Supply Chain Corporate Community Solution

Body

Café de Coral has adopted the GS1 HK “ESG Supply Chain Community Solution” to centralise the collection and calculation of Scope 3 carbon emissions data with its suppliers on a single platform. The platform features an automated carbon‑emission calculation function, enabling suppliers to input their daily operational data, which are automatically converted into carbon‑emission figures, enhancing both efficiency and accuracy.

Compliance with International Standards

The platform has been developed in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and related frameworks to ensure alignment with international standards. It also enables enterprises to meet the HKEX ESG Reporting Guide requirement for disclosing absolute gross greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, the platform can export standardised report formats compatible with the specifications of third‑party assurance bodies, enhancing the credibility and transparency of reporting and supporting the Group in meeting regulatory requirements.

Enhancing Efficiency with Data‑Driven Decision‑Making

The platform reduces the manpower and resources needed for ESG reporting, improving team efficiency and supporting Café de Coral’s data‑driven sustainability strategy.

Automated carbon‑emission collection and calculation lower labour costs. It is estimated that consolidating supplier emission data, which previously took around three to four days each month, can now be completed in one to two days, saving over 50% of the time. This allows the team to focus on strategy development and implementation instead of manual data handling.

The platform also provides analytical tools such as trend charts, heat maps and supplier comparisons to help management monitor emissions, identify key sources and implement targeted reduction measures. By identifying major emission sources, the Group can prioritise improvements, optimise resource allocation and strengthen carbon reduction actions.
