Exploring the First 5G Smart Hospital in Hong Kong – Pioneering Healthcare Solutions at a Glance

The first Smart Hospital in Hong Kong with full 5G network coverage – CUHK Medical Centre (“the hospital”), was officially opened in September. On World Patient Safety Day (17 Sept), GS1 HK arranged a tour to the hospital to experience how the healthcare technologies / solutions offer quality, efficient and affordable medical services to the citizens, ushering into the era of “Smart Healthcare 4.0”. The tour was joined by 40+ people from IoT Industry Advisory Council, healthcare stakeholders and GS1 HK members.
Led by Dr. Fung Hong, the group visited the digital and smart facilities in area of Smart Medicine, Smart Care and Smart Management.

Smart Care – Self-service kiosks enables patients to check-in and print the queue slip with ease; the infotainment panel allows in-patients to order meal, check hospital bills and facilitates doctors to conduct tele-consultation.

Smart Medicine – The hospital uses GS1 global barcode standard for drug management system, each type of medicine on the drug shelf is attached with an electronic tag, which would lit-up for pharmacist to gather what they need; An automated drug dispensing and packaging system which packs required dosage for each scheduled time individually.

Smart Management – RFID-tagged linen-tracking management system can reduce 20 – 30% of wastage and consumption.
Dr. Fung hopes the healthcare staff would focus on patient treatment using these technologies and provide cost-effective services. The hospital applies package fees structure that are affordable and highly transparent.

In the latest APEC Cross-Border E-commerce Training Workshop (APEC CBET), our Chief Operating Officer Dr. Stephen Lam shared the many ways that GS1 Standards help industries, which include product information, traceability, authentication, sustainability, safety & trust and interoperability.

Dr. Lam also illustrated how standards can secure trust in the global COVID-19 vaccine supply chain, how GDS facilitates supply chain visibility & traceability of cross-border commerce among the APEC member economies, as well as how GS1 standards drive supply chain transformation in COVID-19.
Government officials from more than 10 APEC economies, including Canada, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and others, as well as multiple ministries and departments of PRC and other representatives, a total of more than 100 people, participated in the workshop.

Promoting Industrial Internet Harmonization & Innovation Development in Greater Bay Area

The 16th plenary meeting of the Hong Kong/Guangdong Expert Group on Co-operation in Informatisation was held through video conference. GS1 HK strongly support industrial internet harmonization & innovation development in Greater Bay Area by pushing "Industrial Internet Identification Project" forward. We will also co-organise the 11th Guangdong-HK-Macau IoT Competition and 16th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Internet of Things Summit with IoT and Internet Alliances in Guangdong, fostering technology exchange in the Greater Bay Area.

Promoting the Adoption of IoT Standards

Our Chief Executive Anna Lin joined HKSTP’s Protech Day held this month, showing support to IoT development via industry collaboration in Hong Kong. HKSTP & Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Hong Kong Section (IEEE) signed an MOU to drive industry adoption of IoT standards.
GS1 HK supports the development and adoption of IEEE P2668 IoT Maturity Index - a global standard for assessing & grading sensors, devices and technologies, which will be validated for real-life scenarios.
