Capability Building on Product Data Management for Food SMEs

The project aims to provide the industry a structured and practical methodology that covers a master checklist and an implementation guideline on managing product data to fulfill trade needs. A comparison tables that mentions available practises on managing data will also be covered in the guideline.

Background

Food product data management is the process that relates to the proper management of food product related data. Common data like product description, ingredients, nutrition, components, origin, product code, relevant testing or licence reports together with transactional base data such as shipment records, product expiry, etc. are all driving daily challenges to food supply.

Currently, SMEs in the main are using a mix of handwritten records and manual input spreadsheets to support their product data management. Product data is also very scattered and decentralised, buying and commercial, logistics, warehousing, finance, and marketing each have their own information set and management method.

Big data is the future for better food safety!
“Food giant Nestlé has suggested that the huge amount of data collected by companies such as itself and regulatory authorities like the Food Standards Agency (FSA) should be shared so that it can be ‘mined’ for information about emerging food safety problems.”

This project “Capability Building on Product Data Management for Food SMEs” is organised by the International Food Safety Association, implemented by GS1 Hong Kong and funded by the SME Development Fund of the Trade and Industry Department, HKSAR Government. It has been launched to provide the industry a structured and practical methodology on managing product data to support the trade requirements. A comparison table that highlights available practices on managing data will also be featured in the guideline.

Today’s Challenges

  • Product data explosion due to increasing demand (Double demand vs. 2010)
  • High cost on product data management due to large import proportion and lengthy process on data collection  (From one week to three weeks)
  • Lack of industry sharing platform on addressing product data management.

Project Objectives

  • To provide industry, SME in general with the most workable practices on managing product data
  • To provide recommendations and guidelines on product data management
