Overview

More than half (52 percent) of surveyed consumers in ten cities* in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) expect their online spending next year will exceed the amount they spend offline, according to the “Tapping in Smart Retail” report jointly published by GS1 Hong Kong and KPMG China. The consumer survey finds that 82 percent in Hong Kong plan to spend more online next year, whereas only 27 percent of surveyed CEOs said they only sell products and/or services via their own website/platform, indicating that potential opportunities exist for businesses that can offer goods and services on a wider variety of platforms.

The survey results were unveiled at the GS1 Hong Kong Summit. The Summit brought together close to 600 delegates, to explore on strategies that orchestrate people, processes, innovations and technologies to connect all consumer-facing touchpoints with supply chain and back-office systems to create customer value.

Mr. Nicholas W. Yang, GBS, JP, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, inaugurated the Summit as the Guest of Honour and said companies which can innovate continuously are better equipped to face disruptive forces, outlast competitors and thrive in the digital era. The venerated speakers and delegates exchanged exciting dialogue and uttered interesting phrases like “innovate or die”, “digital transformation”, “smart retail”, “omni-channel fulfillment”, “speed of change” and so on.

Speaker quotes:

Mr. Charles Mok,
Legislative Councillor (I.T.)

“I think this is one of the best Forum bringing together all the relevant people, from the technology, logistics, supply chain industry. This tradition is continuing, and this year’s Conference is a very good Conference.”

Joseph Phi,
Chairman of GS1 Hong Kong

“In the digital world, it is a level playing field for everyone, and there is only one version of truth which is determined basically by data. The data come from digitalisation, and the driver behind digitalization is a lot of technologies, such as blockchain, IoT, analytics and so on.”

Mr. Jason Archer,
Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Under Armour

I think for corporate to undergo business transformation, there needs to be solidarity and acknowledgement for all the teams in the company… all the departments and functional units will be motivated to work together to contribute to this digital transformation.

Mr Kent Wong,
Managing Director, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group

“The most important factor for enterprises to succeed in digital transformation is to forget about the successful experiences in the past… such experience (brick-and-mortar stores) is no longer suitable for e-commerce businesses. I hope the successful stories in the past won’t be the burden for our future digital transformation.”

Mr. Ricky Wong
Co-founder and Chairman, Hong Kong Television Network Ltd.

One of the key messages from today’s Summit is that Hong Kong is a city we must stay at the forefront. We cannot be lagging behind as business model is changing. Omni-Channel is of very supremum importance for the future growth of business in Hong Kong.
