What is GS1 barcode

Barcodes are symbols that can be scanned electronically using laser or camera-based systems.

They are used to encode information such as product numbers, serial numbers and batch numbers. Barcodes play a key role in supply chains, enabling users including retailers, manufacturers, transport providers and hospitals to automatically identify and track products as they move through the supply chain. GS1 manages several types of barcodes, many of which comply with ISO standards. Each is designed for use in a different situation.

Two-dimensional (2D) barcodes look like squares or rectangles that contain many small, individual dots. A single 2D barcode can hold a significant amount of information and may remain legible even when printed in a small size or etched on to a product. 2D barcodes are used in a wide range of industries, from manufacturing and warehousing to marketing logistics and healthcare.

Watch this video to learn in 90 seconds the benefits of GS1 barcodes

Over one million companies globally use GS1 barcodes, including all major retailers and online marketplaces. This is because they know that barcodes can help them:

1. Automate work process

Barcodes significantly speed up the work process as they automate the recording of information, accelerating the work process with higher accuracy and efficiency.

2. Enhance Information Accuracy

Barcodes have replaced human hands in terms of entering and reading information. They help eliminate the possibility of human errors, offering a reliable way to read encoded information.

3. Optimise Inventory Management

As product packages feature barcodes, businesses can use the technology to maintain accurate control over inventory. For example, warehouses and retailers can scan barcodes when products arrive and leave, to take a record of inventory. Some companies link their inventory control to online portals so that they can instantly update package status.

4. Achieve Accurate and Efficient Procurement

Since the GS1 barcode is an unique key to identify a product (via GTIN), a location (via GLN) or a shipment (via SSCC), it can be used as a reference key to enable automatic, accurate and fast data capture in different business systems such as product catalogue, information management and procurement systems.

Cost Effective Access to Reliable Product Information

With more than 3 million product records of GS1 Hong Kong members stored, BarcodePlus is a product and location information portal, on which authorised and registered brand owners or distributors of particular products can upload their product barcodes (GTIN), descriptions and images to the BarcodePlus product information repository. BarcodePlus provides a single free entry point available to potential buyers and consumers around the world through web and mobile app (e.g. Consumer Connect).

Accurate Synchronisation of Comprehensive Product Information

Based on GS1 standards including GTINs and GLNs, data pools certified by GS1 GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network) enable trading partners to synchronise and share up-to-date product information globally. GS1 data pools can store over 150 different attributes such as the barcode (GTIN), the description, dimensions and weights, packaging data etc, allowing buyers to efficiently identify the products they are looking for.

Efficient Data Exchange

The GS1 eCom standards (including GS1 EANCOM® and GS1 XML) provide global standards for electronic business messaging that allow automatic electronic transmission of agreed business data between trading partners. Based on GS1 EANCOM® / EDIFACT & GS1 XML standard, ezTRADE is B2B Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) platform provided by GS1 Hong Kong that supports electronic ordering, invoicing and shipment notices. Under GS1 Keys (e.g. GTIN, GLN), ezTRADE enables rapid, efficient, accurate and cost-effective communication of business data between trading partners.
